GEOLOR

The Society of the Amateurs of Geology in Lorraine

A few lines about ourselves.....

Since its foundation in 1986, Geolor is uniting amateurs of Earth Sciences in the Lorraine region of eastern France, as well as collectors of fossils, minerals, rocks and sands from the entire region. But Geolor has not only members from Lorraine. Due to its situation close to the neighbouring countries in the "three-country-corner", it also counts several members from the Grand Dutchy of Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. So it is a true "European Society"....

To its members, Geolor offers a large range of different activities: one- to several-day
monthly excursions to learn about the Earth by own practical experience, reunions, conferences, exhibitions and exchange fairs. Each year in October, associative life reaches its culminating point with a great fair and exhibition in Thionville, our home town halfway between Metz and the city of Luxembourg in the river Mosel valley. The motto of the exhibition in 2005, the biggest so far, was: "A Dinosaur in the City".

"Geolorrains", as we members of the society like to call ourselves, like very much being together, and besides of all geological activities, we arrange family meetings (i.e. a Belgian "Mussels and Fries" meal in autumn, or an Epiphany meeting with the traditional French "galette des rois" (Epiphany cake) for a good start into the new year, or picknicks in Nature....)

The Society of the Amateurs of Geology in Lorraine maintains in two rooms of its home at Thionville a reference collection of fossils, minerals, rocks and sands, which is open to the public every Wednesday and Saturday from 2 pm - 5 pm (closed in August). Entrance is free. We are looking forward to you visiting us!

Society members can also dispose of a well-equipped workshop for rock treatment (saws, grinding- and polishing-machines, breakers, ultra-sonic bath, pneumatic engraving pens, binoculars), a library and slide collection, as well as a conference room.

A monthly round-robin keeps all members informed about all actual activities.

A close cooperation with other associations and institutions in the entire border-crossing region is making possible this large diversity of the different activities. Currently, we are cooperating with:

- The Society for the Administration of the  Geological Nature Reserve of Hettange-Grande
(Type locality of the Hettangium, the lowest stage of the Jurassic)

- The Friends of Geology, Mineralogy and Paleontology of Luxembourg (AGMP), www.agmp.lu

- The National Museum for Natural History of Luxembourg (worth a visit!), www.mnhn.lu

- The Mineralogical Club of Arlon (Belgium)

- The "Jurassic Club" of  Briey (a small town near Metz)

and since 2007 also:

- The Solnhofen Museum (Germany, Bavaria, worth a visit!), www.solnhofen.de

All members of the cooperating clubs may participate at all activities of the different associations, even if they aren't a member of the respective association.

Geolor is very interested in cooperations and partnerships with other geological clubs and institutions from entire Europe - so if this should be of interest to you, please don't hesitate to contact us:
